End of Mayan Calendar 2012, End of the World?

The elections are over. There are winners, and there are losers. But the biggest losers of all are us – the people.

To hell with qualifications and platform of government -- they do not matter in any election, Philippine-style. Expectedly, it was the candidate with the most money who was able to buy the most number of voters who won.

And so, dear friends, let us brace ourselves for the next three years of incompetence and corruption in government. We sold our votes to the devil, and the devil rules. We are surely going to get the kind of government we so richly deserve.

But, on second thought, our sufferings may end before the current crop of politicos finish their three-year terms. If the ancient Mayans are to be believed, the world will come to the end on December 21st, 2012.

The Maya is a civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established in 2000 BC to 250 AD, many Maya cities reached their highest state of development between 250 AD to 900 AD, and continued until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world.

The Maya calendar is a system of complex and highly developed calendars created by the Maya Civilization. When the Spaniards came across the Mayans, they considered them to have pagan practices associated with the devil. Because of that, once they conquered them, they began to burn and otherwise destroy most of the writings of their civilization (known as codices). One Catholic, however, intervened and prevented three from being destroyed. These Mayan codices are now known as the Madrid, Dresden, and Paris codices. The Dresden Codex contains the highest amount of astronomical observations and calculations of any of the surviving pre-Columbian texts.

This strange book, inscribed with unknown hieroglyphs, was written by Maya Indians who once ruled over much of Central America, the ruins of their once grand civilization littering the jungle. In 1880 a brilliant German scholar, who was working as a librarian in Dresden at the time, cracked the code of the Mayan calendar making it possible for other scholars and explorers to translate the many dated inscriptions to be found on buildings, and other ancient Mayan artifacts. He discovered that the Dresden Codex itself was concerned with astronomy providing detailed tables of lunar eclipses and other phenomenon. These were so accurate that they put our own calendar to shame.

On the winter solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years. This has been interpreted to mean that "whatever energy typically streams to Earth from the center of the Milky Way will indeed be disrupted on 12/21/12 at 11:11 p.m. Universal Time". The ancient Maya have prophesied that the world will come to the end on December 21st, 2012.

Some people claim that the ancient Egyptians saw 2012 as a year of great change too. Science seems to agree. NASA predicts a sharp increase in the number of sunspots and sun flares for 2012, sure to cause electrical failures and satellite disruptions. All this may add up to unprecedented catastrophe. First, a polar reversal will cause the north to become the south and the sun to rise in the west. Shattering earthquakes, massive tidal waves and simultaneous volcanic eruptions will follow. Nuclear reactors will melt, buildings will crumble, and a cloud of volcanic dust will block out the sun for 40 years.

These may sound like the ravings of a madman, or perhaps the head of a small apocalyptic sect. But thousands of people worldwide seem to be preparing, in one way or another, for the end of days in 2012. Survival groups exist in Europe, Canada and the United States. The people of the Netherlands have long been concerned about the possibility of a destructive flood killing many as much of that nation is below sea level. And partially because of the Mayan prophecies, some in the Netherlands are concerned that they may be predicting the destruction of their nation and perhaps others, like Belgium.

Of course, the Mayan Code is not to be accepted without question. Past failures of innumerable similar predictions of global doom should dampen enthusiasm for this one. Some experts on the Maya believe Dec. 21, 2012, merits no great attention, pointing out that only one inconclusive mention of the date appears among thousands of deciphered Maya texts. Too, ascribing modern interpretations to stone-carved icons representing a primitive people’s mythology is pseudoscience. There is no scientific, archaeological evidence for the Maya myth.

So, dear friends, we may really have to bear the full three-year terms of the current crop of elected government officials. Let us tighten our belts and close our eyes to the rape and plunder of the government coffers they will surely undertake in order to recoup the millions and millions of pesos they spent in buying our votes.
